A ranching family in Montana is fighting against encroachment on their land. Forrie J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to his normal Southern California voice. He was featured in WatchMojo: The 10 Best Summer TV Shows You’re Missing (2018).
This series has been running since 2018, but I just watched it for the first time
I finished watching the first episode of the first season last night, it’s almost 90 minutes long. The Dutton family is introduced: they have a lot of influence in their valley, but they are defending themselves against “encroachments.” One is from developers who want to build condominiums. Another comes from the neighboring Indian reservation and wants to reclaim some of their land and some cattle. To cope with all this and the sheer size of his ranch, Dutton (credibly played by 60-year-old Kevin Costner) has several grown cowboy sons and a helicopter with a dedicated pilot.
For example: With sons born in 1875, 1900, 1925 and around 1950
I watched the first episode of the first season (on Peacock Streaming) to get a feel for the Dutton family, as I’m currently binge-watching ten episodes of the newer Taylor Sheridan show, 1883, which is sort of a prequel. (Fictional) It’s set in 1883, when the Dutton family from Tennessee joins a larger group to travel “somewhere west” in a covered wagon from Fort Worth, Texas. They must have stopped when they got to Montana. Again, this is fiction, but considering the ages of the men and the fact that Costner was born in 1955, the character in 1883 would likely be the great-grandson of patriarch Dutton (played by Tim McGraw).
Now, in my 70s, I prefer to spend my time watching “pleasant” stories
Yellowstone is a very good series, the actors are all top notch, the cinematography and sound are excellent. It’s just not the kind of show that you’ll get hooked on and watch over and over again. It’s hard to find characters with good qualities, and in the long run I don’t like shows that are constantly about arguments, fights and often murder. Note – 1883 is a really good and interesting series that authentically shows the great difficulties of uprooting and traveling through unknown territories to try to start a new life in a new place.
