When Mathieu gets the call from the theater director whose production he abandoned, the director’s voice is played by filmmaker Stéphane Brizé himself. .
Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher are a well-matched pair, whose chemistry was essential for the film to work
This French film by Stéphane Brizé is a sensitive drama/romance, as old lovers meet again at a different stage in their lives. I’m somewhat torn, because the film’s depiction of their (re)connection is well-nuanced and true, while there are moments of subtle humor and cute interactions.
However, the film is painfully slow, emotionally terse, and nearly two hours over what a more efficient running time would have made it
For example, there is a wedding scene where two men “sing” (whistle) like birds to each other, conversing quite eloquently and magnetically—it would be worth watching this spin-off. Brizé’s constructions and long shots are beautiful but rather sterile, like the inner lives of his sick characters, which are described to the hilt.
