The trio worked together, but alone, trying to uncover some grand conspiracy
This 6-part Netflix spy thriller promised a lot, but ultimately fell short of what it could have been. With a star-studded cast including Keira Knightley as a ninja-punching, weapon-throwing action hero, and Ben Whishaw as her former mentor and current colleague, expectations were high. Both are operatives of the Black Doves, a super-secret mercenary spy organization controlled by Sarah Lancashire, who are doing everything they can to keep "M" Judi Dench; impersonating an obnoxious platinum blonde in a wig. It certainly starts with a bang as we see three young people murdered in central London.
Sharply directed and star studded with A-listers, it somehow failed to hit the mark for me
A separate plot twist involves the death of the Chinese ambassador to Britain, whose party headquarters daughter has also inconveniently disappeared, threatening any possible international political rifts. It’s no big surprise that these two events coincide later, both stories overlapping with the plots of Knightley and Wishaw, especially since she is not only married to the government’s defense minister, but also herself. Caught in the political conflicts surrounding the ambassador’s death, she also had a passionate affair with one of the three originally killed. other characters are introduced into the kaleidoscopic story as Knightley and Whishaw are drawn deeper and deeper into the increasingly inscrutable plot, as mountainous proportions build around and around them, sometimes in their hands, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance.
early promise, fizzled out in a congested plot that relied too heavily on coincidences, gun violence, and quirky, unconventional characters
When everything was finally resolved I felt it was somewhere between James Bond type fantasy and Le Carre type realism, unfortunately escapism won out in the end. When I started watching it I had the urge almost the first time I watched the rest of the episodes, it seemed fine, but around episode 4 I’m afraid there were cracks that no amount of quick dialogue and quick banter could make up (and there were some good ones). Again, it was tense and exciting, although it relied heavily on exposition and didn’t seem to know when to stop. It did end up happening, it was even tied to Die Hard as Christmas time, but in the end it all felt too contrived, convoluted and confusing to really work for me.
There is no need to endlessly waste time
